Walking into a bespoke tailor for the first time can feel intimidating. Here's what a genuinely useful first visit looks like, and how to get the most out of it.

Know the difference: bespoke, made-to-measure, and off-the-rack

Bespoke means a garment is cut from an individual pattern drafted specifically for your body, refined over multiple fittings. Made-to-measure adjusts an existing block pattern to your measurements — faster and less expensive, but less personalised. Off-the-rack is sized, not fitted. Knowing which you're booking helps set the right expectations for price, timeline, and outcome.

What to bring

Wear the shoes and, ideally, the type of shirt you'd wear with the finished garment — trouser length and jacket proportions are judged relative to what's underneath. If you have a favourite jacket that fits well, bring it as a reference point, not to be copied exactly, but to show the cut and shoulder shape you respond to.

What to expect in the first consultation

A good tailor will ask about how you'll actually use the garment — for the office, for travel, for a single event — before talking fabric. Expect a real conversation about lifestyle and posture, not just a tape measure. Fabric selection typically comes after this, from swatch books rather than finished bolts.

Fittings and timeline

Full bespoke usually involves two to three fittings over several weeks to months, including a basted (loosely stitched) fitting where the garment is deliberately incomplete so the pattern can still be adjusted. Made-to-measure is faster, often one fitting. Rushed one-day turnarounds exist in some tailoring hubs, but they trade off the iterative fitting process that produces the best results — useful for travellers, less so if you want the finest possible fit.

Questions worth asking

Ask who actually cuts and sews the garment, how many fittings are included in the price, and what the policy is on adjustments after collection. A tailor confident in their process will answer plainly.
